Golden Globes Predictions

Image result for 2018 golden globes
On Sunday, January 7th the 2018 Golden Globes will be taking place. Below are my predictions. Please note that I will only be making predictions for the film side of things.

BEST MOTION PICTURE - DRAMA

Call Me by Your Name

Dunkirk

The Post

The Shape of Water

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Should win: Call Me by Your Name

Will win: The Shape of Water

While I think Call Me by Your Name has a legitimate shot at winning, it's hard to ignore the amount of love and hype behind The Shape of Water

BEST MOTION PICTURE - MUSICAL OR COMEDY

The Disaster Artist

Get Out

The Greatest Showman

I, Tonya

Lady Bird

Should win: Get Out

Will win: Get Out

Look, there is absolutely no reason why Get Out should be nominated in this category since it is neither a comedy nor a musical, but here we are now. While I wouldn't argue with anyone who thinks Lady Bird will win, I think that Get Out's social relevance will give it an extra boost.

BEST DIRECTOR

Guillermo del Toro - The Shape of Water

Martin McDonagh - Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Christopher Nolan - Dunkirk

Ridley Scott - All the Money in the World

Steven Spielberg - The Post

Should win: Guillermo del Toro

Will win: Guillermo del Toro

You can never really count out someone of Nolan or Spielberg's stature, but I think this is del Toro's year. This is an undeniably beautiful world that he created and he deserves the recognition for everything that this film accomplished.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE - DRAMA

Jessica Chastain - Molly's Game

Sally Hawkins - The Shape of Water

Frances McDormand - Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Meryl Streep - The Post

Michelle Williams - All the Money in the World

Should win: Sally Hawkins

Will win: Sally Hawkins

This is a very close one. I think Sally Hawkins should and will win, but Frances McDormand gave such a strong performance that if she wins, I wouldn't be surprised. However, I think that the performance that Hawkins is able to give without ever speaking a single word is truly exceptional.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE - DRAMA

Timothee Chalamet - Call Me by Your Name

Daniel Day-Lewis - Phantom Thread

Tom Hanks - The Post

Gary Oldman - Darkest Hour

Denzel Washington - Roman J. Israel, Esq.

Should win: Daniel Day-Lewis

Will win: Gary Oldman

If I had to rank the top three from top to bottom, it would go like this: Day-Lewis, Chalamet and then Oldman. The Darkest Hour didn't do much for me and Oldman's performance, while very good, didn't move me in the same way that the performances by Day-Lewis and Chalamet did. Most people lost their minds over Oldman's performance, though, so I don't think he will lose.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE - MUSICAL OR COMEDY

Judi Dench - Victoria & Abdul

Margot Robbie - I, Tonya

Saoirse Ronan - Lady Bird

Emma Stone - Battle of the Sexes

Helen Mirren - The Leisure Seeker

Should win: Saoirse Ronan

Will win: Saoirse Ronan

This is Saoirse Ronan's year. Margot Robbie will put up a fight, for sure, but Ronan is not losing this one.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE - MUSICAL OR COMEDY

Steve Carell - Battle of the Sexes

Ansel Elgort - Baby Driver

James Franco - The Disaster Artist

Hugh Jackman - The Greatest Showman

Daniel Kaluuya - Get Out

Should win: James Franco

Will win: Daniel Kaluuya

This one is tough. James Franco should absolutely win this category, but the amount of support behind Get Out makes me think that Kaluuya might actually steal this one.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE

Mary J. Blige - Mudbound

Hong Chau - Downsizing

Allison Janney - I, Tonya

Laurie Metcalf - Lady Bird

Octavia Spencer - The Shape of Water

Should win: Laurie Metcalf

Will win: Allison Janney

This is a toss-up and I don't really know who will win. Both are great in their own right and even though I would prefer it if Metcalf won, I wouldn't be mad at a Janney win.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE

Willem Dafoe - The Florida Project

Armie Hammer - Call Me by Your Name

Richard Jenkins - The Shape of Water

Christopher Plummer - All the Money in the World

Sam Rockwell - Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Should win: Sam Rockwell

Will win: Willem Dafoe

I never really cared for The Florida Project. Willem Dafoe was very good, but I don't think he would make it onto my top 5 best supporting actors. I think that Sam Rockwell in Three Billboards is absolutely phenomenal but I find it hard to bet against Dafoe and the love around that film.

BEST ANIMATED FILM

The Boss Baby

The Breadwinner

Ferdinand

Coco

Loving Vincent

Should win: Coco

Will win: Coco

I still sincerely believe Coco can and should be nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. No other animated movie will come close to Coco this year.

BEST ORIGINAL SONG IN A MOTION PICTURE

"Home" - Ferdinand

"Mighty River" - Mudbound

"Remember Me" - Coco

"The Star" - The Star

"This Is Me" - The Greatest Showman

Should win: "Remember Me"

Will win: "Remember Me"

Coco's "Remember Me" is very dear to my heart. The moment of the film that finally broke me to pieces revolves around this song. "Remember Me" is a beautiful song that deserves to win this award.

BEST ORIGINAL SCORE IN A MOTION PICTURE

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

The Shape of Water

Phantom Thread

The Post

Dunkirk

Should win: Phantom Thread

Will win: Phantom Thread

To be completely honest, I very rarely pay attention to a film's score. Only those that I think are exceptional actually stand out to me. The only score from this list that I actually remember and that I really noticed in the film was that of Phantom Thread. I think it added a lot to the film and should be the one that wins.

BEST SCREENPLAY IN A MOTION PICTURE

The Shape of Water

Lady Bird

The Post

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Molly's Game

Should win: Lady Bird

Will win: Lady Bird

I would have loved to have seen the screenplays to Wind River, Get Out and Logan on this list. I'm not surprised that Wind River and Logan were left out, but I am shocked at Get Out's omission. With the list that we have, I think it will be a toss-up between The Shape of Water and Lady Bird with Lady Bird ultimately winning.

Film Review: "A Wrinkle in Time"

Director Ava Duvernay is back, this time helming Disney’s live-action adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s book, A Wrinkle in Time .The famed director made history with this film when she became the first female African-American director to helm a live-action film with a budget of over $100 million and only the third female director overall to achieve that budget. The film boasts an impressive cast that includes Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling, Chris Pine and is led by Storm Reid. The film starts off with a short scene in which a young Meg (Reid) is spending time with her dad, Dr. Alex Murry (Pine). The film then jumps ahead to the present day where the four-year anniversary of Dr. Murry’s mysterious disappearance approaches. The first act moves quickly and it hastily portrays Meg as an outkast struggling to understand why her father left her family. Her 6-year-old genius brother ...

Best Films of 2017

2017 has been a ridiculously good year for film. The amount of legitimately great movies we got is outstanding, but it also made this list extremely difficult to make. There are so many films I genuinely thought deserved to be on my list and having to pick which ones were going to be left out was harder than I thought it would be. I would like to point out that these films are on my list because of how they made me feel, and not necessarily just because of how well-made they are. So, without further ado, here are my top 15 best films of 2017! Honorable Mentions: The Shape of Water, The Disaster Artist, The Babysitter, Gerald's Game, Battle of the Sexes, I Tonya, Thor: Ragnarok and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. 15. Wonder Woman, dir. Patty Jenkins Wonder Woman  has to be looked at as one of the most important superhero films we've ever had. It came out in a year where the female voice was louder and clearer than it has ever been. There has never been a female-led supe...

Classic Movie Monday: "Rear Window" vs "Disturbia"

There are certain classics that, in theory, should be much harder to re-imagine than others. Often times, it’s very difficult to modernize certain aspects of a story, whether it be the topic or story plot. By all accounts, Alfred Hitchcock’s mystery thriller Rear Window should have been difficult to adapt in 2007. Rear Window ’s plot makes the film date itself more than other Hitchcock films. At the center of the 1954 film, which stars James Stewart, is L.B. “Jeff” Jeffries, a photographer whose broken-leg forces him to be wheelchair-bound and unable to leave his house. Having nothing else to do, Jeff passes the time by spying on the people from the apartment complex across from his. When he sees what he believes to be a murder at the hands of a man named Thorwald, Jeff takes it upon himself to solve the crime. Rear Window remains one of Hitchcock’s most decorated films, so it is no surprise that eventually someone would try and remake it. The question, however, is how? The idea...
