Film Review: "Love, Simon"

Director and producer Greg Berlanti returns to the director’s chair for the first time since his 2010 film, Life as We Know It , to direct the new teen rom-com, Love, Simon . It is a historic film as it marks the first time a major studio has backed a teen rom-com with a gay character as the lead. It is a film that is far from perfect, but it is an incredible first step towards being more inclusive. The film stars Nick Robinson and features a great cast that includes Josh Duhamel, Jennifer Garner, Katherine Langford, Jorge Lendeborg Jr. and Keiynan Lonsdale.             Love, Simon opens up with Simon doing a quick voiceover on a montage that details how normal his life is aside from having one “huge-ass secret”. During this montage, we are introduced to all of the key characters in the film. He has a loving family, a tight group of friends and seems to do well in school. Despite all of this, Simon always seems to be at a s...

Classic Movie Monday: How "Casablanca" Influenced "Wonder Woman"

Before the release of Wonder Woman, director Patty Jenkins spoke to Fandango about her influences for the film. She mentioned the 1942 classic, Casablanca , and said, “I wanted a great love story where both characters have integrity and it might be set in the complexities of war, but it turns into a grand love story.” At first, I wasn’t quite sure how much Casablanca really factored into Wonder Woman . So, as I move forward with this article, I will talk about how Casablanca influenced Wonder Woman . More specifically, how it helped Wonder Woman become a great love story in a genre where great love stories are far and few in between. I want to start off by talking about the characters and draw some parallels between the leads in both films. While watching Casablanca , I couldn’t help but compare Humphrey Bogart’s char...

Film Review: "Phantom Thread"

When Phantom Thread   ended, the very first thing that came out of my mouth was, “Wow.” I just wasn’t sure what else to say after that. I knew I absolutely loved the film, but I couldn’t think of the right words to express how I felt about it. I don't typically sit through the credits of a film unless I know there's a scene attached after them, but with Phantom Thread   I just sat there after the fact trying to take it all in. As I walked out of the theater, I found myself unable to stop smiling like an idiot because I had just witnessed a love story unlike anything I had ever seen before. “Wow” ended up being the perfect way to sum up my thoughts on the film.             Paul Thomas Anderson's  Phantom Thread  has been one of 2017’s most secretive films. It stars Daniel Day-Lewis as Reynolds Woodcock in what he has announced will be his final role before retir...
