Jurassic World Review

*THIS POST MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS*

When the original Jurassic Park came out, I was not yet born and therefore I don't know what it was like to see it in theatres for the first time. After watching Jurassic World, however, I think I have a pretty good idea of what that must have felt like. In many ways, this movie was a lot more terrifying than most horror films nowadays. I honestly don't remember the last time I watched a movie in theaters that had my heart pounding as much as this one did.

One of the things that this movie did so well was create the same wonder and awe that the original did, while staying original and keeping up with its time. We are thrown into this world where, due to scientific improvements, humans are able to produce dinosaurs and a theme park is finally built around them. The problem that these scientist and park operators are dealing with, however, is having to deal with a generation of people that is constantly asking for the next big thing. As Chris Pratt's character, Owen, points out, "They're dinosaurs, wow enough". Except that it isn't enough, which leads to the creation of the monstrous Indominus Rex, which is a mixture of some of the deadliest animals and dinosaurs. After this beast escapes its cage, Owen and Claire (played by Bryce Dallas Howard) must find a way to stop it while trying to save Claire's young nephews.

There was so much to love in this film. For starters, the visuals in this film were fantastic. It was easy to believe that this world really does exist. I also really enjoyed seeing the raptors back but this time being on the good side. The relationship that Owen created with these wild dinosaurs was fun to watch because you never really knew what to expect. It was also really cool that we were able to explore basically the entire theme park alongside our heroes, instead of bottling this adventure in a small piece of a huge world, which the original kind of did. Speaking of the original, it was fun seeing the remnants of the first attempt at creating this theme park. The final battle was also a special thing to watch on the big screen, for more than one reason. First of all, it was an incredible fight between a bunch of powerful and vicious monsters. That by itself is great to watch. But what made it even more special was finally seeing our old friend, the T-Rex, back in action and with the raptors along its side. It felt like seeing an old friend for the first time in years.

There are many other things that I can talk about and praise but I think I should also talk about some of the things that I could have done without from this movie. I thought that the side-plot with Hoskins (Vincent D'Onofrio) wanting to use the raptors as military weapons was unnecessary and just didn't feel like it did anything to advance the overall story. Also, I understand that sponsors are important for a movie this big to get made, but it would have been nice if the advertising of products in this movie hadn't been so blatant and in-your-face. Overall, though, this movie is one you should definitely try to catch in theaters. I give it an 8.5/10.

What's Your Favorite Scary Movie?

What is it about horror movies that draw audiences in to see them?   There is the thrill of being scared, sure, but is that really as far as it goes? I think not. You see, more than any other genre, horror films are a product of their generation and they typically speak to or highlight the societal issues that are going on around the time that a given horror film is made.   In many ways, horror films help us understand or comment on important issues such as race ( Get Out ), sexuality ( It Follows ), and mental/physical/emotional issues ( The Babadook ). Horror is a genre with many faces but for this particular article, I will touch on what I believe to be the best horror subgenres, the slasher film, and discuss why they are important.              I can understand why people may be a bit turned off by slasher films. In many ways they are a lot closer to reality than a monster or demonic horror movie. Many slasher films...

7 Movies That Define Who I Am as a Film Fan

Movies have been a part of my life for as long as I remember. As I have gotten older, I have realized that I love cinema and I wish to be involved with it in any way possible. I see cinema as a way to escape reality and be in a world outside of our own. I love analyzing film and trying to figure what any particular shot in a movie meant or what it was supposed to show. Movies have a way of affecting certain people in certain ways and that's what this list is about. The following list is NOT what I consider to be the greatest films of all time. They are simply the films that have impacted my life significantly. This list might contain minor spoilers/plot points but I will do my best to keep that to a minimum. I hope you guys enjoy this list and I encourage you to watch any of the films on here that you may not have already seen before. This list is not in any particular order. 1.  Hercules  (1997) Disney's Hercules  is one of those movies that I wish people would ...

Welcome to Classic Movie Mondays

Classic cinema represents the best of what film can be. Most of the films we see and love today take ideas from the classics that came before them. La La Land , one of 2016’s most beloved films, owes a debt of gratitude to films like Singin’ in the Rain , An American in Paris and West Side Story . I believe that it is completely possible to enjoy films without having knowledge of what came before them, but I also think that having that knowledge enhances your experience of them. I understand why people today might not want to seek out a 70-year-old film. Thanks to Netflix, Hulu and Amazon we have an unending stream of modern films to explore. Even beyond that, I know there are many people out there who simply don’t like black-and-white movies. Others find older movie effects laughable. There are some who don’t watch old films because they look and feel old. With every year comes newer and newer technological advances that make older films look less impressive. Yet, despite ...
